THE OWI VOLUME 1: A RETROSPECTIVE
One year ago today the OWI went on-line. I do not even know where to begin in this
retrospective. We have come so far in such a short amount of time. What started as a simple
thread on the NBC message boards has grown into an online community that I would have
never imagined.
There are so may people I have to thank. First of all then fans. Without your participation
there would be no OWI. The huge amount of people who started to religiously read the
Unified Theory at NBC each week just blew me away. You continued your support when I
opened the OWI and I know there are so many out there still tuning in each week to see what
is going on. My countless members on the message boards. Those of who who not only read
but post as well have made this such a mature, educated and fun place to visit each day. My
moderators, Ashaman, Shangrila, TullaluhBear and the many others who have come and
gone. Without you the OWI boards would be a complete nightmare. Thank you so very much.
Seagryfn who created one of the best comparisons of Isaac's art to real life action on the
entire internet. Thank you for everything. Shangrila also for all of her great graphics and
Vampyre for his humor. The fans who contribute to the fan fiction section regularly, Synch,
Red Vector and Unlikely Hiro. Your work is inspired and entertaining, thank you.
This site could have just been another bump on the internet superhighway were it not
for the stars of the show who have given of their time for interviews. Matthew John
Armstrong who played Ted Sprague was our first interview back in January, a scant 6 weeks
after the OWI went online. I was so nervous, being my first interview and all, but he made it
seem so easy. Thank you to Matthew. For months I hassled Greg Grunberg, who plays Matt
Parkman, through his myspace administrator. She finally came through for us and in the
summer Greg did a great Q & A with us and I hope to interview him in the future. In
seemingly quick succession I was allowed two interviews one in July and next September. I
spoke to James Kyson Lee while he was on the way to San Diego Comic-Con. We had a great
talk and he is so much of a fan of the show as the next person. I heard afterwards that as he
got off the phone with me he met the rest of the cast at a burger joint...what a missed
opportunity to get passed around on the phone. In September came an amazing interview
with the guy that everyone knows simply as the Haitian, Jimmy Jean-Louis. His life has been
one of struggles and persistence and he was an inspiration to not only me but to many
people. Masi Oka chimed in with a quick Q & A in November which I hope can eventually be
expanded. Thank you to all of the stars who helped out in this little venture of ours. There
was one actor who literally slipped through our fingers this summer...hopefully we can make
that happen some day soon. There are many more to come and I look forward to the
opportunities the second year will bring.
The people at NBC who have helped this site. Directly or indirectly. I know you are
reading and I hope that I have helped form the HEROES universe.
Hillary Robson who asked to interview me for a book she was helping to write about
HEROES. I would have never imagined that I would be the one interviewed when this started
out. Thank you for including me and the OWI.
Speaking of interviews how about the appearance on G4 in November. It was short but
man was it ever sweet! I look forward to the next go around.
DC Comics came through and allowed us to review the hard cover version of all the
online graphic novels. What a great experience and an even greater book.
Finally, I think thanks need to be directed at Tim Kring and crew for being so open to the
fans and for creating such an amazing TV show. Without Tim I would not have 'met' so many
fine people through the internet. I hope that some day I can meet the man and thank him
personally.
Without Hiro telling us, we have no clue what the future will bring. But we can be sure
of one thing, we will continue on this great HEROES adventure together and be a part of the
phenomenon. If I forgot anyone please do not take it as an offense. Just realize that this
whole thing has gotten so big that one man cannot remember it all. But do not think that
your part in the OWI is small afterall it is the sum of the parts that make up the whole.

Rollercoasters are fun!
by David Deas, THE OWI
Claire and West...click. Sylar and the twins...click. The killer of the 12...click. Hiro playing
samurai...click. Peter in Ireland...click. Bennet chasing paintings by Isaac...click. Mohinder,
Matt and Molly playing house...click. Monica and Micah with Nana in New Orleans...click.
Bob, Kensei and Adam Monroe...click.
Rollercoasters are amazing things. The way rollercoasters work is by using potential and
kinetic energy. The more potential energy a coaster gains translates directly into the kinetic
energy that is used. They have to climb a huge hill at the beginning of the ride to gain this
potential energy, the longer and higher the hill, the more kinetic energy available.
The last five episodes have been the hill. A long hill with a high peak. Five episodes have
built up a huge amount of potential energy.
Before the rollercoaster can turn all of it's potential energy into kinetic energy it has to get
to the crest of the hill and release the brakes.
Tonight was the crest of the hill and the brakes have been released. We are at the top of the
hill and looking down on the beginning of the ride. If you are sitting at the front of a
rollercoaster you can look down and see some of the twists and turns that you will
experience in your very near future. Then suddenly you get that funny feeling in your
stomach. That feeling of a thrill, or the rush of fear and your adreneline kicks in.
When Kensei turned his back on Hiro, I heard the last click on the track. When Bennet shot
his mentor Ivan in the head, I knew we hit the top of the hill. When Peter time travelled to
June 14th, 2008 into a desolate and spooky Times Square, I knew the brakes had been
released.
We can look down now at the next 5 episodes of this run of HEROES and know that we are in
for one hell of a rollercoaster. We can see some of the twists and turns. We will be turned
upside down and put through a barrell roll or two...and we will not see all of them coming.
The writers have given us a slow long hill to climb...but only because they knew that in
order to have enough kinetic energy for the full season they had to build up a lot of potential
energy. They have done that in spades and gotten us to the top of the hill. The brakes are
off. My hands are up in the air...do you have that funny feeling in your stomach yet?

The Kindness of Tim Kring...
by David Deas, THE OWI
Hello. My name is Thomas. I was a doubter. This week, I am reborn. I apologize. How could I
have gone astray? This episode was amazing. Even without two heavy hitters like Peter and
Hiro, this episode was firing on all cylinders. There is not one thing I could possibly say
against 'The Kindness of Strangers'. It was full of twists and turns, answered questions while
raising others. I had not felt chills this season as I did this week. I could go on and on, but I
won't. This episode can only be praised by saying thank you to the creator, Tim Kring. Thank
you.

Kindred 2.3 Op-Ed
by David Deas, THE OWI
I am a bit disappointed, a bit annoyed. All I have heard from fans over the last few weeks was
frustration over the lack of depth of HEROES' season 2. I kept telling people to wait it out that
they had to set up story lines for the new characters. The writers needed to let people get
into the new season. That HEROES would soon turn up the heat and get going like it did last
season. I am champion of the show, I know it can be great!
Then episode 3 came out. Fans are still waiting. I, am still waiting. I am starting to agree with
the fan base, I am a bit disappointed. A few examples of my personal disappointment so far.
I get that Nissan is the main sponsor of the show. I get it. I still cannot believe my eyes that
the kid in the Mexican prison with Maya and Alejandro drives a BRAND NEW, freshly washed
Nissan Rogue. I mean c'mon. I know it was Claire's Rogue, but once again do we have to be
SO connected? Can we please stop getting the Nissan Rogue shoved down our throat?
Throw an old Datsun 280 in there or something. George Lucas created Star Wars with the
idea of a 'used universe'. I wouldn't mind seeing this technique used in HEROES. Why is
everything new and fresh? Back to the Nissan placements, it was cute last year with Hiro
and the Nissan Versa...but to have a random kid in Mexican jail have a Rogue? That was
cheap and cheesy and I hope that Tim Kring is livid at the fact that his show has become a
corporate goon to Nissan.
I am personally livid at how slow the development of the Maya and Alejandro characters is.
Can the two of them PLEASE get to America. They are taking up way too much screen time
for such little progress. I would have rather had Micah and Niki and the reveal of DL's death
take up 5 minutes of episode 2 compared to these two. I know they are important to the plot
but hopefully so are Micah and Niki.
During the season finale many fans, not me, complained about the lack of a fight. That the
show built up to a massive showdown between Peter and Sylar. Then the fans were
disappointed in the result. I on the other hand thought that the ending was perfect. The
moment between Peter and Nathan was spot on. It was about the brothers and not the
abilities. However, this season it is about the 'Trials of Takezo Kensei'. Why did we not get to
see him fight even 5 of the '90 Angry Ronin'? All summer we have been asked to go to the
Yamagato viral site and learn about Takezo Kensei and his history. Then the time comes to
see a fight and we get cut away to my next disappointment, never to see even one simple
sword fight.
So we leave Kensei at the very moment of the fight and we get Claire and West. In the
cheesiest scene on HEROES ever. Let me preface this by saying that I understand there are
different demographics here. I know that Claire represents the teenage high school drama
target audience. However it just doesn't fit with her character. This is the same Claire we
met in the beginning of season 1. During the last season she developed and grew so much
and now she is right back at square one. The flying scene was cheesy, plain and simple. I
would rather have seen Kensei fight at least 1 'Angry Ronin' than watch West fly Claire
around Costa Verde.
Peter open the damn box! Peter was not the smartest tool in the shed last season. I agree
that this is what limits Peter's power. He is an all powerful being and the writers had to give
him some limitations, but open the damn box! I like seeing him out of his element and away
from Nathan. Once again, Peter open the damn box!
Sylar. The shining light of the show. Thank God he was back. It was nice to see that Sylar
needed 8 surgeries to be back in shape. That shows the complainers about the lack of death
in the finale that he was pretty much dead and that someone NEEDS him alive. His scenes
were the best so far. Thank God he killed 'Candice', have a nice day!
But why couldn't the producers have brought Missy Peregrym back for those couple of
scenes? I know she is on a new show on a different network. But I feel that could have been
worked out for that short amount of screen time. It would have been more satisfying. The
explanation was lame. She said the cops were looking for her 'old' look. She is in the middle
of a freaking jungle! Not sure too many cops are out there looking for her. I think it is a
shame to have the previous work of Miss. Peregrym, which was great, thrown out the
window like that.
What is Parkman doing? Every scene he has been in he is sleeping. Do you have so little for
him to do that he just sleeps? Shouldn't he be detecting? Where was Nathan? The Haitian?
The combo of Sylar returning, Hiro writing to Ando, which was great, and the reveal that Mr.
Bennet is on the hit list were the three great moments of the show.
Noah Bennet is one of the foundations of the show. To see his face with a gunshot through
the left eye in one of Isaac's paintings was scary. There have only been 3 instances where
Isaac's paintings did not come true. I could not imagine HEROES without Bennet. As I have
heard time and again, Bennet is the 'Batman' to this cast of people with special abilities. The
reveal of that painting is the same as the reveal of Isaac's bomb painting last season. It isn't
about saving the world this year. It is about saving one man, Noah Bennet. The first great
suspense of the new year.
As I said previously I know the writers are setting up plot lines, but I think some characters
are getting the short end for over exposure to new ones and Nissan ads.
I hope I am proven wrong. I know the writers are fantastic and have woven depth into the
show. I just hope the success of HEROES doesn't go to NBC's head and that too many hands
are not in the pot. Tim Kring and Co., please don't let the fans be disappointed.

Hayden and the 'Media'
by David Deas THE OWI
I just wanted to do a quick op-ed about our favorite cheerleader Hayden Panettiere. I have
heard some nasty things and been shown really unflattering pictures of her from gossip
columnists and paparazzi. I cannot believe that people would subject an 18 year old person
to such scrutiny. Shame on all of you. Can she go to the store and not have to worry about a
picture being taken of her? Why is it that she is constantly asked who she is dating? The
amount of pressure must be tremendous on a young star such as she.
Hayden is a good person, not a drinker or a partier. You don't see her getting DUIs and doing
drugs. Why does the 'media' feel they need to drag her through the mud. I am glad she had
the guts to confront a reporter on the red carpet at the Emmy's, it may not have been the
right time or place but that comes with experience...however, that reporter and all others
that portray her in a poor light deserve it.
Hayden, this is directed at you. Keep being who you are. You are an incredible role model to
young people and you do not deserve the scrutiny that you get from 'gossip columnists'. Keep
doing what you are doing. You will gain even more respect from people that matter than you
already garner.

STOP HATIN’ ON HEROES
Why the finale was GREAT!
David Deas, THE OWI
Since the season finale of HEROES this past Monday I have read a torrent of reviews bashing
the show for its lack of spectacular effects and the ‘lame’, 'boring' attempt at a Peter vs Sylar
battle royale, there have even cries for New York City to have been blown up by an
exploding man.
I beg to differ that the season finale was exactly what it should have been. We were shown
earlier in the season what needed to be done. Peter was supposed to, ‘Save the
Cheerleader. Save the World’. He saved Claire from the hands of Sylar at ‘Homecoming’.
Therefore the next part was inevitable.
The people who are crying foul about no special effects and no major battle royale, missed
the meaning of the show. It was never about the cool special effects, it was never really
about the extraordinary abilities. The show was about one thing alone, the ordinary people.
People who cared about each other, people who had friends and families.
The ending with Peter and Nathan was fantastic. All season we have watched Nathan
Petrelli ride the fence of good and evil, hoped to see him fly, waited to see him stand for
something good. We got all of that. Critics ask ‘why didn’t Peter just fly away himself?’, I will
present you with two reasons. One, it
wouldn’t have been as dramatic, this is a drama after all. Two is because Peter even said
that he couldn’t control his abilities, they were in overload. He had just been exposed to a
bunch of new abilities and his fight with Sylar had set off Ted’s radiation.
To everyone that is panning this finale…you missed the point.
I applaud Tim Kring, the writing, directing and production staff that brought us maybe one of
the best complete seasons of television ever. Also NBC deserves it’s due for standing behind
'Team Kring'. They know they have a hit on their hands and will continue to support it. The
cast is just downright amazing. I can’t say enough about all of them. Who can?
'Team Kring', keep doing what you are doing…all the 'ordinary people' I know love your show.

HOLY $#!%!: Beeman and Loeb for Presidents!
by David Deas, THE OWI
After a few less than thrilling episodes set at level 6, Jeph Loeb and Greg Beeman, you guys
turned it back up to an 11. 'Unexpected' was the perfect title for this episode. All I can say is
that I am still stunned. This is what HEROES is all about. Beeman and Loeb did you two ever
hit the nail on the head. This is the formula that fans are craving, intensity, suspense and
action. I am almost speechless. The writing was amazing the direction perfect in everyway.
The twists and turns, the use of incredible acting from all of the actors especially Zachary
Quinto. Sylar is the epitomy of a great villian, he can charm you to death. If this was just
Episode 16, I cannot even imagine what the season finale will bring. I will admit the past few
shows have left me a bit dry...such a Doubting Thomas I and many other fans were. Well
shame on us! In the words of Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar..."We're not worthy, we're
not worthy!"

PLEASE STOP NBC!!
by David Deas THE OWI
I created this fan community to give the viewers a place where they could share in the
experience of an amazing television drama, form their own opinions and create a
community. So here is my most recent opinion about HEROES.
STOP WITH THE TAG LINES! 'Save the cheerleader. Save the world', 'Are you on the list?',
and now 'Who's Claire's Daddy'. Okay so we saved the cheerleader... shouldn't we be saving
the world now? 'Are you on the list' lasted ONE episode and now we have 'Who's Claire's
Daddy?' It is starting to seem a bit cheesy, cheap and forced to have these tag lines. This
show stands on it's own two feet with the writing, acting and directing. Why continue with
the cheap marketing?
First of all 'Who's Claire's Daddy?' has sexual overtones to it. Second we have yet to actually
meet her mom, now we are already on to dad? SLOW DOWN!! Season two has been given a
green light why rush? I know that many LOST fans lost (pun intended) interest because they
took too long to answer important questions. That should not however translate into rushing
all of the answers on HEROES.
The fans love the show there is no doubt, look at the ratings numbers, fan sites and
message boards. HEROES resonates, why dumb it down with cheap and unexciting
marketing. What ever happened to 'Ordinary people, with extraordinary abilities?' Simple
and to the point. I beg you..PLEASE STOP NBC!
