Very few facts are known about the Haitian; he is indeed a mysterious man.
The Haitian is a tall, muscular man, assumed to be in his early thirties. He
is bald, well-dressed, and wears a gold pendant a single strand of a DNA
double helix, the same symbol found on Chandra Suresh’s computer list of
known SGs.
He takes his orders from Mr. Bennet, at OWI. He has the ability to remove
memories. No one, possibly not even Mr. Bennet, knows his name. If Mr.
Bennet does know his true name, he has never spoken it. OWI staff assumes
he is mute, as he has never spoken to any of them, with the possible
exception of Mr. Bennet.
The Haitian also serves Bennet by blocking the telepathic powers of others.
In an encounter with Matt Parkman a policeman with the LAPD who hears
the thoughts of others, the Haitian's powers interfered with Parkman's
attempts to listen to the thoughts of Mr. Bennet and his daughter, Claire,
respectively. Matt does manage to overcome the interference in both
instances, but only enough to get a single name and after considerable
strain on his part the second time. When Mr. Bennet tells Matt that his
telepathy won't work while he is being held captive, the Haitian is suddenly
revealed to be standing in the same room. Similarly, when Mr. Bennet tells
Eden McCain that her persuasion powers won't work on him when she was
first captured, the Haitian is shown to be standing nearby.
There is an aura of danger about the Haitian, a readiness to spring, like a
stalking panther, that is evident even in his most relaxed poses. Although
he issues his orders with the confidence of one who knows he is speaking
to an underling, Mr. Bennet at times seems to be afraid of the Haitian, and
has indicated that he doesn’t fully trust MM to not be a spy for the
benefactor of OWI, or some other organization.
Whether his ability allows him to remove specific memories within a given
timeline, or if he is constrained to wiping all memories within a certain
period of time is unknown. There is evidence to support both theories.
For instance, he has paid many visits to Sandra Bennet, wife of OWI’s Mr.
Bennet, in order to remove memories of their daughter, Claire’s ability to
regenerate tissue. Yet, Mrs. Bennet’s memory concerning day-to-day
activities and events, not related to her daughter’s ability, seems to be
untouched. On the other hand, Mr. Bennet recently ordered mind wipes for
his son, Lyle, and Claire’s best friend, Zach, both of whom knew about Claire’
s ability. After his encounter with the Haitian, Lyle lost several hours of
time, and didn’t even know it. Zach lost all his memories regarding Claire,
over the past ten years. In the case of Brody Mitchum, a rapist who
attempted to force himself on Claire, the Haitian followed Bennet's order to
"hollow out” Brody. Afterward, Brody no longer recognized even his own
name but his basic abilities such as general coordination and language
skills intact.
Upon Mr. Bennet’s order, he has interfered with the memories of not only
ordinary people, but also several people carrying the Super Genome that is
known to give people like Claire their superhuman abilities. SGs whose
memories have been altered by the Haitian include Matt Parkman and Ted
Sprague of New York, who generates radiation. Other SGs who have had
contact with him, are Nathan Petrelli, of New York City, who can fly, Isaac
Mendez, an artist New York City, who has the ability to predict the future in
his paintings, and Gabriel Gray, better known as “Sylar” a serial murderer of
SGs in order to take their powers into himself.
Nathan Petrelli was captured by Mr. Bennet and MM in Las Vegas, but
managed to escape before MM could probe his mind, by flying away.
Isaac Mendez was held in captivity at OWI, in a high security holding cell,
for several days. Although the Haitian was present at some of the staff’s
meetings with Isaac, it is not known whether or not his memory was
altered. I tend to think not, as there has been no evidence pointing to
memory erasure.
The Haitian assisted Eden McCain in the capture of Sylar, who is still held
in a special cell at OWI. It is possible there has been limited memory
erasure, but if not, it is a certainty that Mr. Bennet will order one. Sylar has
already made one attempt on Claire Bennet’s life.
It is also possible that the late Eden McCain and the Haitian were working
together on a private agenda. They often exchanged silent communication
with facial expressions and gestures unseen by others. Yet, in her
communications with Mr. Bennet, and in the presence of him, Ms. McCain
expressed contempt for the Haitian.
Although everyone assumes the Haitian is mute, and implicitly follows
Bennet’s orders, we have acquired definitive evidence to the contrary.
Through secretly placed electronic monitoring devices in the Bennet home,
which even Mr. Bennet is unaware of, we have videotape of the Haitian’s
encounter with Claire Bennet.
Claire was home alone, and waiting for the imminent arrival of her father
when the front door burst open, and the Haitian ran in. After a brief struggle,
during which Claire kicked the front door shut, he restrained Claire from
behind, and with his hand over her mouth so she couldn’t scream, spoke to
Claire. The following is a partial transcript of what he told Claire:
Haitian: I work for your father. He sent me here to make you forget; like he
sent me to your friend, and to your brother, and to your mother, so many
times. He’ll be here soon, expecting that you won’t remember anything. But
it is very important that you do. Tell me, Claire: Can you keep a secret?
So, the Haitian can speak, and apparently has a secret agenda that prevents
him from carrying out all Mr. Bennet’s orders in order to serve its own
purpose.
This is only the first part of our investigation of the Haitian. In light of this
new information, we will continue to monitor his movements and delve into
his past in order to learn his name, and whether he is secretly spying for
another organization, or simply has his own agenda to fulfill.
